Build Strong, Restoration-ready Jaws with Dental Bone Grafting

Today, patients can address tooth loss with high-quality, long-lasting dental restorations, like dental implants and dentures. However, prolonged tooth loss can lead to jawbone recession and low bone density, making it more difficult to replace missing teeth. But, with dental bone grafting, patients can effectively rebuild their jaw tissue to prepare for life-changing restorative treatments.

Don’t let low jawbone volume prevent you from completing your smile. Get the healthy, strong, and functional bone tissue you need to smile with ease at Villa Rica Family Dental. What is dental bone grafting?

Dental bone grafting is a procedure that uses donor tissue to rebuild a weak jawbone. Typically, the donor tissue (which can be organic or synthetic) encourages bone regeneration simply by offering structural support and essential minerals for regrowth.

Not only does dental bone grafting help rebuild weak jaw tissue, but it also helps improve blood flow and nerve function in the mouth. The result is a healthier, stronger jaw that’s ready to support your natural teeth and new dental restorations.

How do I know if I need bone grafting?

It’s hard to locate areas of weakness in the jawbone with the naked eye. Fortunately, Dr. Stacey uses advanced imaging technology to gather precise information about the relative health and density of hidden oral structures. She can then use this information to accurately pinpoint areas of low bone density and strategize your unique treatment plan for optimal results.

Why do I need a dental bone graft?

A recent study found that approximately half of all patients who want dental implants require a dental bone graft to prepare for implant surgery. This is because receding bone tissue may be too low or weak to support the implants. And, if dental implants don’t have enough bone tissue to anchor them into place, then the implant procedure may fail.

Additionally, insufficient bone tissue can make other restorations (like removable dentures) more difficult or uncomfortable to wear. As a result, these restorations can create painful contact ulcers, which can make eating and speaking feel excruciating.

However, patients can avoid pain and complications by safely preparing for implant surgery and dental restorations with a minimally-invasive bone grafting procedure.

Is the procedure painful?

We get it–bone grafting sounds scary. But, it is a relatively straightforward procedure that can take as few as 20 minutes to complete. Not only that, but Dr. Stacey facilitates your comfort by administering local anesthesia to entirely desensitize the treatment area.

Patients may also explore other comfort options, like nitrous oxide or oral sedation, to further enhance their comfort and relaxation during dental bone grafting.

How long does it take to heal from the procedure?

Typically, pain and swelling greatly diminish after seven to ten days. However, the graft needs time to assimilate into the existing tissue to stimulate bone growth. This process can take up to nine months.

Comprehensive follow-up exams with Dr. Stacey can help our team decide exactly when you are ready for implant surgery or new dental restorations.
